Every journey leaves two footprints: one on the places we visit, and one on the person we become. I believe the future of travel depends on ensuring that the first footprint is as light as possible, while the second grows deeper in awareness, responsibility, and purpose.
As an international student who has travelled across multiple countries and lived within diverse cultural environments, I have come to understand travel not as simple movement across borders, but as transformation shaped by responsibility. Each country I have experienced has expanded my worldview in different ways. I have witnessed remarkable natural beauty, vibrant multicultural cities, and inspiring human connection. At the same time, I have also seen the consequences of unsustainable living, including pollution, plastic waste, and communities affected by climate change. These experiences have strengthened my belief that travel must evolve from passive exploration into conscious stewardship of the planet.
In a world increasingly defined by environmental challenges, travel carries clear responsibility. For me, sustainability is not a temporary habit or optional practice; it is a mindset that influences how I live, learn, and engage with the world. It represents respect for nature, responsibility toward communities, and accountability to future generations who will inherit the consequences of today’s actions.
My approach aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities. These goals remind us that global change does not depend only on governments or organisations, but also on individuals making consistent, conscious decisions. As person I see myself as part of this global responsibility, capable of demonstrating sustainable behaviour across cultures and borders.
To ensure my international placement is as sustainable as possible, I have committed to practical eco conscious actions. I reduce waste by carrying reusable items such as water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers, limiting dependence on single use plastics. I prioritise digital resources over printed materials and adopt mindful consumption by using only what is necessary. These simple choices, when practised consistently, contribute to a wider culture of sustainability and environmental awareness.
Transportation is another important aspect of my approach. While international travel is inherently carbon intensive, I strive to minimise my footprint by using public transport, walking, and cycling whenever possible. These choices not only reduce emissions but also allow me to engage more deeply with local environments and communities, experiencing places in a more meaningful and authentic way.
However, sustainability is not only environmental it is cultural and ethical. I believe responsible travel requires humility and respect in every place we enter. During my placement, I intend to support local businesses, respect cultural traditions, and engage with communities in a thoughtful and positive manner. True global citizenship is defined not just by exposure, but by contribution.
What inspires me most is the understanding that sustainability is built through consistency, not perfection. Small actions, repeated over time, create significant collective impact.
