Dear Earth

Dear Earth,
I know every journey leaves a mark.

My journey starts at the airport. Carrying excitement, ambition but also the knowledge that travelling internationally comes with a cost to the environment. That’s something I’ve thought about while preparing for my placement abroad. Travelling gives people opportunities they may never experience however it also comes with responsibility. Sustainability is not about being perfect but being aware of the impact I have and trying to make better choices. Thus, as I prepare for my international placement, I aim to implement that truth, rather than ignore it.

I think international exchange changes people in ways that go beyond academics. People come home with different perspectives, new habits, and a better understanding of the world around them. At least, that’s what I hope this experience does for me. I don’t want my time abroad to just be about visiting famous places or taking photos. I want it to be about learning how other people live, what communities value, and how different countries approach sustainability in everyday life.

While on my placement, I want to make conscious decisions that reduce unnecessary waste and support the local community. I plan to use public transport and walk whenever possible instead of relying on cars or taxis. I already try to carry reusable essentials like a water bottle and I’ll continue doing that abroad. I also want to support smaller local businesses where I can, rather than automatically choosing large chains out of convenience.

Travelling sustainably also means travelling respectfully. Listening before speaking. Learning from local communities, rather than imposing upon them. And recognising that every culture has different, yet valuable lessons about living more sustainably. Sustainability extends beyond environmental action alone, thus through this exchange I hope to not only share my experiences, but more importantly learn from others, whose approaches to transport, recycling, food systems and community life may differ from my own.

Sustainable communities. Climate action. Global partnerships. Responsible consumption. These are all values that reflect the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Yet for me, these are not policies simply written on paper. These are choices made daily by ordinary people. They are reflected in how we travel, what we purchase and how carefully we treat the environments we temporarily call home.

I know my individual actions won’t solve climate change. One student carrying a reusable bottle doesn’t undo rising sea levels. However, I believe true meaningful change comes from individual accountability and a collective effort. Thus, if educational exchange can help students become more thoughtful, globally aware citizens, then its impact can extend far beyond just one semester abroad.

So, as I prepare to cross borders, I hope I carry more than just luggage with me. I hope I carry openness, respect, and a willingness to learn. Most of all, I hope my experience abroad reminds me that seeing the world should make us want to protect it better.

Yours sincerely,
A traveller trying to tread lightly
