As I pursue my summer school studies in Sustainability Transformation, ESG Finance, and Energy Management at Bocconi University in Milan, I am becoming aware that the way we travel, learn, and engage with the world must evolve alongside the climate crisis we collectively face.
Studying this sustainability course abroad is not just an academic certificate to be added to the CV, it is a living experiment. Milan, a city balancing industrial legacy, the economy, with progressive environmental policy, is the perfect backdrop for this journey. I chose this program precisely because it equips me with the tools to understand and help lead the systemic shifts needed across sectors. The knowledge I gain here will ripple far beyond the classroom, influencing how I act and advocate in my career and in the real world.
To align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, I have committed to several key measures. First, I opted for the most fuel-efficient travel route with carbon offset options, purchasing verified carbon credits to help neutralize the emissions from my flight. Once in Milan, I’ve solely relied on public transportation, cycling, and walking, limiting my carbon footprint while embracing a more grounded, local way to enjoy the vibrant city.
In keeping with SDG 12, I’ve embraced a minimalist travel lifestyle which includes packing light, reusing and recycling materials, and choosing local, plant-based food options whenever possible. I also brought a reusable water bottle, cutlery set, and shopping tote to reduce single-use waste. These habits might seem minimal, but multiplied over time and shared with peers, they contribute to a culture of environmental consciousness. https://www.undp.org/sustainable-development-goals
Moreover, I view sustainability as a community practice. While it is important to connect with peers about responsible travel and energy consumption, at Bocconi, I’ve been consistently engaging in conversations with classmates in group projects about many different case studies for sustainable practices in business. For example, Cerveceria Asturiana Net-Zero Carbon Brewing, ESG rating of Nike and Tesla, and the Argos Climate Action: When sustainability becomes real in private equity. These discussions on real-life issues have led to an informal student pledge to reduce waste, support ethical businesses, and document sustainable practices abroad. This living pledge embodies SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating that collaboration is vital for transformative change.
Sustainability is about progress. As I continue my studies, I intend to compile and share a sustainability travel guide, write testimonials, share my experience abroad with other students at in-person events and on social media, raising awareness, providing practical tips and reflections for future students who choose to study abroad.
By choosing to study sustainability abroad, I’m not just learning about the future, I’m actively participating in it. With every metro ride, shared meal, and course discussion, I strive to make this journey as clean, conscious, and impactful as I can. Thank you.
