Travel has always been more than just a way to see new places—for me, it’s been an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with the world beyond the classroom. During my study abroad placement at Marbella University in 2023/2024, I gained invaluable academic and cultural experience, but I also became deeply aware of the environmental footprint international travel can leave behind. That realisation motivated me to explore how I could make my time abroad more sustainable and align my actions with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Before I even left for Spain, I started researching ways to reduce the environmental impact of my journey. I opted for flights with lower emissions and chose to pack light to reduce fuel use. Once in Marbella, I committed to walking or using public transport as much as possible, which not only reduced my carbon footprint but also gave me the chance to engage more with the local community and environment.
During my semester abroad, I focused especially on SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). I consciously reduced my use of single-use plastics by carrying a reusable water bottle, shopping at local markets instead of large chains, and preparing meals at home with fresh, local ingredients. I also supported eco-friendly businesses, such as cafes and shops that prioritised sustainability, and made an effort to attend local sustainability events and as part of this group, I helped organise beach clean-up days and awareness campaigns on reducing plastic waste. These activities not only had a positive impact on the local area but also created a sense of shared responsibility among international students. It showed me how collective action—even on a small scale—can contribute meaningfully to a cleaner, healthier planet.
Since returning to Northumbria University, I’ve continued to promote sustainable travel among fellow students. I gave a short talk during our pre-departure briefing for outgoing exchange students, sharing tips on eco-conscious travel habits and encouraging others to think about the environmental impact of their choices abroad. I also collaborated with our international office to create an online guide outlining practical steps for sustainable study abroad experiences, from choosing green accommodation to offsetting carbon emissions.
I genuinely believe that travel and sustainability can go hand in hand. With thoughtful planning and small everyday actions, we can experience the world without harming it. Studying abroad opened my eyes to the importance of being a responsible global citizen, and I’m committed to continuing that journey—both as a traveller and as a student who wants to help shape a more sustainable future.
