Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to grow academically and personally, but it also comes with a responsibility to consider the environmental impact of international mobility. Although travelling from Denmark to the UK has an unavoidable carbon footprint, I believe sustainability is about making conscious choices that reduce environmental impact wherever possible.
During my exchange semester at the University of Leeds, I intend to make sustainable choices both in my travels and in my daily life. Rather than relying on domestic flights, I plan to use trains and public transportation to explore the UK and nearby destinations. Living in one city for an entire semester also encourages slower, more meaningful travel, allowing me to experience the local culture without frequent long-distance trips.
In my everyday life, I will continue habits that promote sustainability, including using reusable water bottles and shopping bags, reducing food waste, recycling, and choosing second-hand products when possible. I also hope to support local businesses and participate in sustainability initiatives offered by the university or local community.
My exchange semester aligns closely with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By studying abroad, I contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education) through gaining international academic and intercultural experience. My commitment to using sustainable transport and embracing responsible travel supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), while reducing waste and making mindful purchasing decisions contributes to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Additionally, choosing environmentally friendly alternatives whenever possible reflects the ambitions of SDG 13 (Climate Action).
As a student of Communication and Cultural Encounters, I also believe sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility. It includes building inclusive communities, respecting cultural diversity, and learning from people with different perspectives. I hope my time at the University of Leeds will strengthen my understanding of global challenges and inspire me to contribute to more sustainable and socially responsible practices in both my academic and professional future.
While one exchange semester cannot solve climate change, I believe that small, conscious actions collectively make a difference. By approaching my international placement with sustainability in mind, I aim to minimise my environmental impact while making the most of the educational and cultural opportunities that studying abroad offers.
