I aim to travel responsibly by reducing waste, using public transport, supporting local communities, and aligning my placement with UN Sustainable Development Goals for positive impact.

Travel is more than moving between destinations; it is an opportunity to learn, grow, and create a positive impact. International placements allow students to experience new cultures, develop professional skills, and expand their perspectives. However, travel also comes with environmental responsibilities. For me, sustainability means making conscious decisions that reduce harm to the planet while contributing meaningfully to local communities.

During my international placement, I intend to prioritise low-carbon and eco-friendly travel wherever possible. I will rely on public transport such as buses, trains, and shared mobility instead of unnecessary private transport. For shorter distances, I plan to walk or cycle, reducing carbon emissions while also engaging more deeply with the local environment. These choices directly support UN Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action by minimising my travel footprint.

Waste reduction is another important part of sustainable travel. I already practise carrying reusable essentials such as a water bottle, shopping bag, and food containers to reduce dependence on single-use plastics. During my placement, I will continue these habits and ensure waste is sorted and recycled responsibly according to local guidelines. This aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, encouraging mindful use of resources.

Sustainability is not only environmental; it is also social and economic. I believe responsible travel includes supporting local communities. I plan to purchase from local businesses, explore local markets, and choose locally owned accommodation or services where possible. This helps strengthen local economies and reflects SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Cultural respect is equally essential. Learning from another country means appreciating its traditions, customs, and values. I will approach my placement with openness, respect, and willingness to adapt. Building genuine relationships and exchanging knowledge can create long-term positive outcomes beyond the placement itself, supporting SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

At home, I already try to live sustainably by reducing food waste, limiting unnecessary purchases, and being mindful of energy consumption. My international placement is an extension of these values. I want my experience abroad to demonstrate that small daily actions—when practised consistently—can collectively contribute to a cleaner environment and more sustainable future.

Travel should not only change the traveller; it should leave a positive legacy in the places visited. Through conscious choices, responsible habits, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, I hope to ensure my international placement is meaningful, sustainable, and impactful.
