Sustainable travel is no longer just an option but a responsibility, especially in today’s world where environmental challenges are increasing rapidly. As a student preparing for an international placement, I strongly believe that travel should not come at the cost of the environment. Instead, it should contribute positively to both society and sustainability goals.
During my international placement, I aim to adopt eco-friendly practices that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action and responsible consumption. One of the key steps I have taken is being mindful of my transportation choices. Wherever possible, I will prioritise public transport such as buses and trains instead of relying on private vehicles. This helps reduce carbon emissions and promotes a more sustainable way of travelling.
In addition, I plan to minimise waste by carrying reusable items such as water bottles, shopping bags, and containers. Avoiding single-use plastics is a simple yet effective way to reduce environmental impact. I will also ensure proper waste disposal and recycling wherever facilities are available. These small actions collectively make a significant difference when practised consistently.
Accommodation is another area where sustainability plays an important role. I intend to choose environmentally responsible housing options that follow energy-saving practices. Being conscious of energy usage, such as turning off lights and reducing unnecessary electricity consumption, will be part of my daily routine.
Furthermore, I believe sustainability is not just about environmental responsibility but also about social awareness. I aim to support local communities by choosing local businesses, respecting cultural practices, and contributing positively to the environment I will be part of. This approach helps create a more meaningful and responsible travel experience.
My academic background in technology has also influenced my perspective on sustainability. Through my dissertation project on phishing detection systems, I have developed problem-solving and analytical skills, which I can apply to real-world challenges, including sustainability awareness. I believe technology can play a significant role in promoting sustainable practices, and I aim to contribute towards this in the future.
Overall, my goal during this international placement is to travel responsibly, minimise environmental impact, and promote sustainability through my actions. By making conscious choices and encouraging others to do the same, I hope to contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
