My plan for a sustainable exchange

Travel has always been an important part of my life. I have travelled with my family and friends for as long as I can remember. Over the years of traveling, I have learned that traveling sustainably is often not only better for the environment but also more affordable. As a student, this becomes very essential to me. Traveling by train gives a lot of freedom and creates memories. A night train from Stockholm to Berlin offers so much more than a flight, because it becomes part of the adventure.

During my exchange at Keele University, I want to explore as much of the UK as possible while traveling sustainably. I am excited to visit different cities by train or bus, especially to visit Scotland because it’s been on my bucket list for years. Exploring the country through its rail network will allow me to experience the landscapes and communities along the way, rather than simply traveling from one destination to another.

Growing up in Stockholm has made public transport part of my everyday life. Instead of seeing the commute as a waste of time, I usually read books or listen to music. I hope to continue with these habits during my exchange.

Another way I reduce my environmental impact is by buying and selling second-hand items. I plan to continue this in England. As I am only staying for one semester, how will I also be able to fit everything in my suitcase? I want to reduce unnecessary consumption, but I am still hoping to try new things.

These choices support several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By using public transport, I will contribute to SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities. By reducing waste and choosing second-hand products, I support SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production. Above all, I hope to contribute to SDG 13: Climate action by making lower-carbon footprints and sustainable choices throughout my exchange.

Studying abroad is not only an opportunity to learn academically but also to learn from another country’s approach to adaptability. I hope to discover new ideas to bring back home and share with friends and family. We only have one planet, and I believe that small everyday choices like taking the train or shopping second hand can make a real difference for future generations.
