A suitcase full of Goals

Dear Eden,

I’ve just finished my first week at the University of York, and I really wish you were here with me! The campus is just as you described — full of green spaces, ducks waddling around, and a truly lively atmosphere. I’ve been thinking of you constantly and plan to follow all your wonderful recommendations while I’m here.

To start off my journey, I took the university’s collection service from the airport to campus. It was a shared transport option, which was not only super convenient but also better for the environment, as it helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I later found out that the University of York actively promotes sustainable travel as part of its environmental strategy, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 (climate action), so I feel like I’ve contributed in a small but meaningful way!

Once I arrived and unpacked my suitcase, my housemates and I sat down to discuss how to make the most of our shared space, with sustainability in mind. We agreed to limit our water usage by taking shorter showers and being mindful when washing dishes and doing laundry. We also decided to share meals whenever someone cooks more than needed. Personally, I’ve started planning my meals ahead to help prevent any food waste. These efforts align with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 (responsible consumption and production), and I’m happy to be making daily choices that reflect that goal.

If you haven’t noticed already, I want to be as environmentally aware and green as possible during my time at York, so I’ve already made a few small changes: the other day, while exploring the city centre, I came across a beautiful local market. One of the stands there was selling York-themed reusable water bottles and bought one right away! It’s the perfect souvenir and a great way to avoid single-use plastics. Oh, I also got the tote bag from that second-hand shop you told me about. I’ve used it like ten times already. It’s been so useful and I’m proud of every time I skip a plastic bag.

Next week — spoiler alert — I’m going hiking in the Lake District! I’m beyond excited. I’ve been doing some research on officially approved routes and sustainable guided tours so I can enjoy nature while protecting local biodiversity and ecosystems. Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 (life on land), I’m trying my best to travel and explore in ways that respect the environment.

That’s all for now, but I’ll write again soon. Oh Eden, I’m looking forward to learning as much as possible about life and culture here. As a translation student, I feel a deep commitment to reducing learning gaps and contributing meaningfully to this experience — and I know you understand exactly what I mean.

Take care and speak soon!

Love,

Maite
