Last week, I did something remarkable. I had the honor of accompanying sea turtles in their natural habitat and swimming alongside them. It was truly unforgettable. The government of Oman had closed Damaniyat Island to protect the turtles during their mating season. Seeing these beautiful, yet endangered creatures up close opened my eyes to the urgent need for a greener future. As I hope to be able to swim with my green friends again in the future.
Traveling abroad for study is a remarkable opportunity to broaden horizons and gain global perspectives. However, it also comes with environmental responsibilities, especially considering the climate impact of international travel. I firmly believe that sustainability must be integrated into all aspects of our lives, including education and travel. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), I am committed to minimizing my environmental footprint during my international placement.
Understanding that air travel is one of the highest contributors to carbon emissions, I have taken several measures to promote eco-friendly travel. First, I plan to offset the carbon emissions from my flights by investing in verified carbon offset projects, such as reforestation or renewable energy initiatives. This helps balance out the environmental impact and supports sustainable development in vulnerable communities.
Beyond offsetting, I aim to adopt sustainable habits while abroad. I will prioritize public transportation, cycling, or walking instead of renting or using private vehicles, reducing daily emissions during my stay. I will also minimize waste by using reusable items like water bottles, coffee cups, and shopping bags, and actively participate in local recycling programs.
I am aware that sustainable travel goes beyond reducing emissions—it also involves supporting local economies and respecting cultural and natural environments. I intend to engage with local communities responsibly, choosing eco-conscious accommodations and services that prioritize sustainability. This not only reduces environmental harm but helps promote sustainable tourism that benefits the host country socially and economically.
Furthermore, I am motivated to use my experience and education to advocate for sustainable development in my future career. As I study international law with a focus on human rights and global justice, I recognize the link between environmental sustainability and social equity. Climate change disproportionately affects marginalized communities, especially in conflict-affected regions like my home country of Afghanistan. By aligning my career goals with the SDGs, I hope to contribute to policies and initiatives that promote both environmental protection and human rights.
To sum up, while travel inevitably impacts the environment, I believe it is possible to make conscious, sustainable choices to reduce this impact. By offsetting emissions, adopting eco-friendly habits, supporting sustainable local economies, and aligning my personal and professional goals with the UN’s sustainability agenda, I am committed to making my international placement as environmentally responsible as possible. I see this commitment not only as an obligation but as an essential part of being a global citizen who values the planet and its people equally.
