As I begin to prepare for my study abroad experience, I approach it with sustainability at the forefront of my mind. Whilst international travel inevitably contributes to carbon footprint, I believe that with my intentional decisions that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (mainly SDG 11, 12, and 13), I can ensure I remain as eco-friendly as possible.
The first step that I plan to take is packing light to reduce overconsumption, which is a rising problem in today’s society. This has drastically impacted both the environment and our physical health. (https://sentientmedia.org/overconsumption/)
Additionally, Vancouver’s efficient public transport and cycling lifestyle will allow me to explore without relying on cars, which showcases the city’s own commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
In terms of housing, I have sought out accommodation that prioritises waste reduction and one where recycling is easily accessible nearby. In order to minimise single use items (for example, plastics), I will opt for reusable water bottles and tote bags for grocery shopping. This is already a habit I have developed at home and that I will carry with me on my study abroad experience.
Beyond these lifestyle choices, I plan to engage meaningfully with the local community, through local clean up events or calls for climate action campaigns. By supporting locally owned businesses, I can also contribute to Vancouver’s green economy and reduce the carbon costs that come with imported goods.
Within my university abroad, I also hope to can encourage others to adopt more environmentally conscious habits.
In my opinion, sustainability when travelling is about contributing to the health of the places we choose to visit. By making mindful choices, engaging with the community and remaining willing to learn, I intend for my time in Vancouver to be a model of how international study experiences can blend well with climate responsibility.
