Engineering Sustainable Change Through Community

As an engineering student, I have always been interested in solving problems. Before travelling to Bali with Think Pacific, I believed sustainability was largely about designing better technologies, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. However, my experience showed me that the most effective solutions are not always the most advanced—they are the ones developed alongside the communities they are intended to support.

Think Pacific’s Ultimate Bali programme provided the opportunity to experience sustainability from a completely different perspective. By working alongside local organisations and learning directly from community leaders, I began to understand that sustainability is not simply about protecting the environment, but also about strengthening communities, preserving culture and creating opportunities for future generations.

Although international travel inevitably has an environmental impact, I wanted to ensure my placement contributed positively in return. Throughout the programme, I reduced unnecessary waste by carrying a reusable water bottle, limiting single-use plastics and supporting locally owned businesses. More importantly, I focused on learning from the people and organisations we visited rather than viewing them as case studies.

One of the most memorable experiences was visiting organisations tackling sustainability through very different approaches. Seeing how renewable energy projects were adapted to local communities demonstrated that successful engineering is not just about technical performance but about accessibility and long-term practicality. Likewise, organisations dedicated to marine conservation and wildlife protection highlighted the importance of preserving ecosystems while educating local communities and visitors about their role in protecting them. These experiences reflected several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Climate Action (SDG 13), Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Life on Land (SDG 15).

What surprised me most was that every organisation approached sustainability differently because every community faced different challenges. Rather than applying one solution everywhere, they listened first, understood local needs and then developed practical responses. That way of thinking closely reflects engineering itself: the best solution is rarely the most complex, but the one that is most appropriate for the people using it.

This experience has changed how I view my future career. As an engineer, I want to develop technologies that are not only innovative but also socially responsible and environmentally sustainable. My time in Bali reinforced that technical knowledge alone is not enough; understanding culture, collaboration and community needs is equally important when creating lasting solutions.

Looking back, the greatest lesson I will take home is that sustainability is built through partnerships. International experiences are valuable because they allow us to exchange ideas, challenge our assumptions and return with new perspectives that can strengthen our own communities. That is what sustainable travel now means to me: learning from others, applying those lessons responsibly and using them to create positive change long after the journey has ended.
