A lot of small steps make a big difference.

Travel is a great opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with people from different cultures. However, it’s also important to recognize the environmental impact it can have, especially with things like flying, using resources, and producing waste. That’s why I’ve made it a priority to travel as sustainably as possible during my international placement, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

To reduce my carbon footprint, I try to make smart choices about transportation. For example, I take public transport, walk, or cycle to work whenever I can instead of relying on taxis or rental cars. If I have to fly, I look for direct flights instead of stop overs due to the extra carbon footprint it produces.

When it comes to daily living, I avoid single-use plastics by carrying a reusable water bottle, shopping bags and do my best to recycle and reduce waste where possible. I make an effort to buy local products, support local food markets, and choose plant-based meals more often to reduce my environmental impact.

Respecting the local culture and environment is also really important to me. I make time to learn about the community I’m staying in, immerse myself in the culture and follow local guidelines, especially when visiting natural sites. I avoid tours or activities that harm animals or ecosystems, and I try to contribute positively by supporting ethical businesses or even volunteering for local environmental or social causes when possible.

One thing I’ve also been doing is sharing sustainable travel tips with friends and online. I believe that if more people are aware of how to travel responsibly, it can lead to bigger change. Even small actions like using less plastic or choosing public transport can make a difference if enough people do them.

Overall, I see sustainable travel as a way to not only reduce harm but also give back to the places I visit. It’s about being mindful of my choices and trying to have a positive impact wherever I go. By aligning my actions with the UN’s goals, I hope to contribute in a meaningful way—both environmentally and socially—during my time abroad.
